Located in the centre of Kildare Heritage Town, the Silken Thomas is less than a 10 minute walk from Kildare Village Outlet Shopping and a 15 minute walk from the Irish National Stud. In the car park behind the Silken Thomas stands Kildare Tower House, a 13 century building which was originally one of four towers to make up Kildare Castle. In 1316 the castle was granted by King Edward II to John Fitzgerald and appointed him the newly created title Earl of Kildare in recognition for his services during the Bruce invasion. This marked the start of the Fitzgerald’s association with Kildare.
